SPIG PRESS BRIEFING

Service Providers welcome White Paper

The Service Provider Interest Group, SPIG, representing the interests of communications service providers, has welcomed the White Paper on communications regulation. In the future world of converged IT, telecoms and broadcasting, service providers will be key to delivering service in response to customer requirements.

SPIG believes that effective economic regulation will have even greater importance if the Government is to achieve its objective to make the UK home to the most dynamic and competitive communications and media market in the world. SPIG therefore welcomes the promise of tough regulation to ensure there is fair access to dominant network systems and expects that this will be supported by an even handed and rigorous complaints regime. This should support a fair competitive environment, providing benefit to consumers and lay the foundations for a vibrant service provision sector.

SPIG recognises and welcomes the focus on consumer protection and is already involved with work to develop an ombudsman scheme. SPIG looks forward to considering how service providers might best play a part in responding to the various challenges posed by the white Paper.
